Technical Director of Athletics Federation. of Nigeria,Samuel Onikeku has commended Minister of youth and sports’ decision to include some of the athletes that did well at world Under- 20 Athletics Championship in Kenya in adopt-an-athlete Initiative.
Onikeku said it is a right step in right direction especially with challenges faced by the athletes in graduating from junior to senior category.
‘This is coming at a right time for these kids and for the federation considering how difficult it has been pushing these athletes to the next phase which requires a lot of finance,in the past a lot of promising athletes have fizzled out due lack of support’ but the Minister’s decision will take away distraction which has hampered the development of so many athletes from reaching the pinnacle of their career, besides most of them are bread winners of their family and when there is no support they will have to look for alternative means to survive’he concluded.
