Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, is set to host the 9th edition of the biennial FIBA U16 Afrobasket Championship for the first time in the country’s history.
Scheduled to take place between July and September, the tournament will see Africa’s top young basketball talents compete for a place at the 2026 FIBA U17 World Cup, with the top two teams earning automatic qualification.
Egypt has dominated the competition over the years, winning five titles in 2009, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2021.
Other past champions include Angola (2013), Mali (2017), and Guinea, the most recent winners in 2023.
The U16 Afrobasket has grown into a stage where emerging stars shine and continental rivalries come to life, making it a key event in Africa’s basketball calendar.
