Nigeria’s Super Eagles defender William Troost Ekong was thrown straight into the starting lineup as Salernitana ended the disastrous run of form in the Italian Serie A.
The 28-year-old defender moved to the Italian club on Wednesday on loan from the English Championship side Watford FC.
Salernitana had secured just 2 points in the last 7 matches and was playing away to Lecce who was unbeaten in the last 6 games.
It took just five minutes to break the deadlock and it was Salernitana who went in front after the host defender made a mistake and the ball dropped on the feet of Boualaye Dia, who thumped it first time from outside the box into the near bottom corner.
Bouba Dia made it 2-0 for Salernitana before Giuseppe Pezella reduced the deficit to 2-1.
Lecce pressed for the equaliser late in the second half but Salernitana’s defence led by Ekong did enough to secure the maximum points.
