Shortly after SCC Napoli scooped the Scudetto for the 2022-23 Serie A season, social media has gone bizarre on whom the TRUE King of Naples City is, with two candidates coming to mind.
Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Goergia’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia have struck a cohesive and efficient partnership, which rubbed off nicely on the Partenopei positively toward the title with five games to spare.
Thirty-three years on from the last time the City of Naples roared the name of an icon in their midst, the 1989-90 season when a certain Diego Armando Maradona guarded Napoli to glory.
That year, only Gianfranco Zola was the other big name in the team that could boast of sharing the spotlight with Maradona.
But fast-forward to 2023, two superstars divide opinions while attracting plaudits.
Khvicha completed an €11.50 million transfer from Home club Dinamo Batumi in the summer of 2022, where he had only spent three months after leaving Rubin Kazan FC in March.
But the 22-year-old Georgian has tripled expectations, by creating premium chances while finishing off some, with his 14 goals and 16 assists for Napoli only second-best to Victor’s goal contributions tally.
Osimhen alternatively is running to the end of his third stint with the Partenopei following his €75 million move from French club LOSC Lille in the summer of 2020.
Three years on and Osimhen is only seven shy of a century of goals (93) for Napoli while bagging 24 assists alongside. With the current campaign his best season yet with 22 goals and five assists, while firing five strikes in six UCL games.
Khvicha could be touted as the creator, while Victor, is the finisher. But both players have distinct qualities they thrive on individually as players and collectively as a team.
The Serie A will be dishing out her quota of the Player Of The Season Award while Napoli does the same for the club, with both players genuine favorites across the board.
