Belgium Pro League leaders KRC Genk lost Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu on Tuesday’s transfer deadline day to Southampton and that was a huge blow for the Limburgers.

It was gathered that the first game without the lanky striker immediately resulted in a loss of points at KAS Eupen. Wouter Vrancken spoke about Onuachu’s departure.

“There is a lot of respect between us. I am very happy for him. He deserved the move to the Premier League.

“I have never seen such a humble and sweet person in football like him. He has taken very big steps and this is a childhood dream of his. The club has adopted a very human attitude. The offer had to be right and that was it. Then we have to stick to it,” said Vrancken at Eleven Sports.

The departure of Onuachu is therefore a very big loss. This season, Aly Samatta is a shadow of the player he was from his first period at Genk, so the chance that he will succeed Onuachu in the base in the coming weeks and months seems very small.

Racing Genk will mainly count on new Nigerian acquisition Tolu Arokodare, who came over for Amiens. He must quickly follow up on Onuachu’s departure.

Dimitri De Condé already has a lot of confidence in the new attacker.

“Despite his height, he is very agile, fast in the first meters and strong with his head. Tolu is already showing flashes of his class.

“In addition, there are also a lot of options under the wings of our technical staff, he will play and we can take big steps forward in the coming years.

“We have proven with several other young talents that KRC Genk is the ideal environment for this,” De Condé said on the club website.
