The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Ministry of Sports Development are working hand in hand in making sure that a substantive coach who leads Super Eagles in subsequent African Nations Cup and FIFA World Cup is announced soon.
The NFF had to resort to drafting the Technical Director, Austin Eguavoen as interim coach who led Super Eagles to a win and a draw in their first two 2025 AFCON qualifying games after efforts to get Bruno Labbadia as replacement of Finidi George as Eagles Coach failed.
Despite Nigeria being at the top of the table with four points from two games with Benin Republic and Rwanda, the federation and the Ministry have not relented in their search for a substantive coach.
Speaking on Morning Show on Arise TV on Wednesday morning, Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh said, “we have promised Nigerians about getting a think tank team (for the Super Eagles), unfortunately, Nigerians will not be able to know enough with the back and forth that goes behind the scene. I personally got briefing about what was going on when they told me we have to play our first two African Nations Cup qualifier games without a substantive coach but with an interim coach in the person of Austin Eguavoen.
“But it gave us positive results, thank God, the first match that took place in Uyo got a result we have not been able to achieve in a long time.
“With little more time, we are going to sort out all that we couldn’t sort out (about Eagles coach)
In a chat with the President of NFF, Ibrahim Gusau, revealed that the federation is working assiduously in getting a substantive coach for the Super Eagles.
“We are working on it, he responded when asked about the federation’s efforts in getting a substantive coach for the three times African champions.
Meanwhile, Austin Eguavoen is not sure if he’s still going to be occuphying the position when the Super Eagles face Libya in the two legged games (home and away) in the 2025 African Nations Cup qualifier against Libya in October.
