Guardiola wants to defend title

Pep Guardiola seemed to direct a small dig at Liverpool’s disappointing title defence this season, when asked after their 4-1 win over Wolves if his side are now all but champions.

“We are in the best position right now to take them out and we are going to try but they are the champions. We want to win it and next season defend it all season,” said the City coach.

“Right now there is 33 points to play [for]. We are 15 points ahead today. Tomorrow our opponents will play, now we have one or two days off, rest everyone especially mentally, because we don’t have much time and prepare for United at home.”

When Manchester City could lift the Premier League title

Guardiola suggesting that he wants to defend the title ‘all season’ could point towards the fact that Liverpool have been utterly unable to do so this term. Serious injury befell many of the Reds’ first-team squad, however.

City have lost the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero throughout the season, but Guardiola’s squad boasts so much depth that covering these players was easily done. In addition, the afflictions, when compared to those at Liverpool, were not particularly long-term.

When can City win it?

After Manchester United’s draw against Crystal Palace yesterday evening, the question is now being asked as a matter of when and not if City win the title.

People have begun crunching the numbers, and it appears that just 6 more wins may be required for the Sky Blues to secure glory.

City’s chances of clinching the title before even May 8th would of course increase if the likes of Manchester United and Leicester City continue to drop points. The Foxes and Red Devils have both picked up just 7 of their last 15 available points.

Brendan Rodgers will be hoping that his side do not suffer a similar slump in form to the one they did last season, which eventually cost the club Champions League qualification. United, meanwhile, have all of the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League still on the table, and could be stretched thin across each competition.

City too have their hand in 4 tournaments, with the prospect of a historic quadruple still on the cards.
