Defenders dealings

With the state of the transfer market in complete disarray with the summer window ending just last month and the January window reopening in less than two months, clubs are already working hard to negotiate deals in preparation.

Liverpool’s centre-back situation is growing more concerning by the week. Virgil van Dijk’s long-term absence has been made worse by the recent news that Joe Gomez has suffered a potentially serious injury. Liverpool have been linked with a number of possible defensive reinforcements including Schalke defender Ozan Kabak.

However, speaking on the ‘Here We Go’ podcast, Fabrizio Romano said that The Reds could miss out on Kabak with an Italian giant circling the 20-year-old.

He said, “AC Milan are in talks with 2 players; Kabak and Lovato. Schalke are currently looking for Kabak’s replacement and AC Milan will look to sign him in January.”

Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma looks set to sign a new contract having been linked with a move away to Everton in the summer.

“Kurt Zouma was Carlo Ancelotti’s first option. More than Todibo and others. Chelsea wanted him to stay and he’s a new leader now. They want to extend his contract. Frank Lampard is convinced for the future,” said Romano.

Whereas Jerome Boateng’s time at Bayern Munich looks to be coming to an end. The German and European champions have reportedly decided not to renew his contract and he will leave for free. Several Premier League clubs are said to be interested in the 32-year-old.

Szoboszlai latest

The increasing intensity of links of Red Bull Salzburg’s Dominik Szoboszlai have continued to gain momentum over the last few weeks. The Hungarian international has been touted to be of interest to a number of clubs, most notably Arsenal.

Having risen through the Salzburg academy, Szoboszlai has displayed performances well beyond his years in the Champions League. Clubs have seen the success of the likes of Sadio Mane, Dayot Upamecano and Erling Haaland since leaving Austria and are now convinced Szoboszlai is the next to emerge.

Fabrizio Romano has however played down that negotiations with the north London club are advanced.

“Right now I am seeing rumours about Dominik Szoboszlai to Arsenal; that he has signed agreements, advanced talks, etc. That’s not true. He has release clause of €25M. He’s in Arsenal’s list but nothing’s advanced.”

The Athletic’s David Ornstein recently played down talk of serious January business for Arsenal and so a deal for the Hungarian, if any, would likely occur in the summer.

Arsenal are considering Dominik Szoboszlai as a possible alternative to Houssem Aouar after ‘following’ him for ‘years’
