The likelihood of Callum Wilson playing vs Sheffield United

Newcastle United and Steve Bruce will be hoping that Callum Wilson returns soon ahead of their crunch match with Sheffield United.

Wilson out as Carrol steps up

Newcastle were hit with a double barrel of bad news yesterday after initially being knocked out of the FA Cup 3rd round by Arsenal and the confirmation that Callum Wilson could be injured was a second kick in the teeth.

Wilson has been an excellent striking acquisition ever since signing from Bournemouth in the summer and without him in the line up the Magpies have looked slightly toothless. Record signing Joelinton has never looked like being prolific forward since his move from the Bundesliga.

Although missing, Steve Bruce did provide an upbeat update in regards to the England international’s absence.

“Purely precaution. Hopefully, we’ll leave it with the medical people, and be ready for Tuesday,” said Bruce.

The word ‘hopefully’ may not fill too many Newcastle fans with confidence but they will take solace in the fact that his replacement Andy Carroll had a good game against Arsenal and was unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions.

“I thought Andy did fantastically well. If he had topped it off by scoring a goal, it would have been good for him,” said Bruce. “There were a lot of pleasing things. We’ve had a tough run of fixtures, but we dust ourselves down and go again.”

Sheffield United goals

Newcastle’s  match against Sheffield United with the possibility of no Wilson will take on an intriguing narrative. The lowest scorers in the Premier League under Chris Wilder looked in better attacking form after their 3rd round victory over Bristol Rovers.

Goals from Ollie Burke, his first for the club, and Jaydon Bogle may make Wilder reconsider who to field in the clash with the Magpies. The signing of Rhian Brewster is yet to pay dividends and they have scored just 8 goals all season.

“We needed a win because of the form and results – we needed that for the players and for the football club,” Chris Wilder said.

“I put out as strong a selection as I could. It’s not a huge game for a lot of people outside this football club, but a big win for us and for the supporters.”

The goal from Bogle itself was one which will make many Blades fans wonder where the footballing style shown in the move has been all season and will bring hope that maybe the relegation favourites could pick up some points in the near future.
