Timo Werner expresses excitement at PL getting underway before finding net 4 minutes into Chelsea debut

Chelsea attacker Timo Werner has today opened up on his eagerness for the new season to get underway, having begun to find his feet as part of the Blues’ squad.

Chelsea switch

Following weeks of rampant speculation, Werner’s Stamford Bridge switch was finally made official on the 18th of June.

Despite long-standing links with Premier League rivals Liverpool, the German hitman opted to link up with Frank Lampard’s outfit, with Werner set to join forces with fellow Blues signing Hakim Ziyech to form a potentially lethal frontline in southwest London in 2020/21.

Werner’s Premier League move comes with the versatile 24-year-old having enjoyed another scintillating campaign last time out, during which he racked up 34 goals and 10 assists across all competitions.

Werner on target

And, if the first glimpse of Werner in Chelsea’s colours is anything to go by, then the Pensioners’ faithful have plenty of reason to feel optimistic that their big-money striker is set to carry his goalscoring exploits into English football.

Frank Lampard’s men took to the pitch this afternoon, for the club’s first pre-season friendly of the summer.

The capital giants visited the Amex Stadium for a meeting with Brighton, with the 90 minutes having eventually seen the sides forced to settle for a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

Pascal Gross was the man on target for Brighton, though it was Werner who stole the headlines with his first in Chelsea’s colours.

A pinpoint floated ball to the back post courtesy of fellow summer arrival Hakim Ziyech was met by Callum Hudson-Odoi, who’s cushioned header set up Werner to slot home with ease.

The German’s first for his new club came after just 4 minutes of action.

‘Can’t wait!’

Werner’s strike this afternoon, meanwhile, came just hours after the former Leipzig man had expressed his unbridled excitement at the prospect of the Premier League season’s commencement.

Speaking in an interview with Chelsea’s official website, Werner was drawn on getting his Blues career up and running, with the 24-year-old having gone on to explain:

‘I’m very excited. I can’t wait!’

‘I was training on my own for a while when I first signed, but I’ve been working with the whole team over the past week or so and it’s been great.’

‘It was strange at first [when I arrived] because you just want to work hard, meet all the team and get straight to it on the training field but I had to be patient.’

‘I’m very happy that the league starts in two weeks and I’m excited to test myself in the Premier League.’
