West Ham’s struggle to find a new defender continues / Marseille reportedly reject £20 million offer for Caleta-Car

Rejected again

Duje Caleta-Car could prove to be the next former Red Bull Salzburg talent to grace the Premier League.

This comes with West Ham having reportedly seen a £20 million bid rejected for his signature.

It is added that this figure is ‘quite a long way from the price set by OM.’

Caleta-Car joined Marseille from the Austrian champions for £15 million. With this fee just 2 years old, though, any sale would likely require a significantly increased bid to convince Marseille to part ways with their Croatian centre-half.

West Ham have been frustrated thus far in their search for defensive reinforcements, with Wesley Fofana all set to join Leicester City. The east London club previously saw a bid rejected for the Saint-Etienne defender, before deciding to end their pursuit.

David Moyes’ side are continuing to scour France for other options. The club, though, appear to have once again undervalued their latest target.

Another Bull

If Caleta-Car does go on to make the move to West Ham, he would represent just the latest Red Bull Salzburg youth product to cut their teeth in one of Europe’s top leagues.

The Austrian side have seen countless youngsters leave their side to make it big in Europe.

The most notable examples come in the form of Sadio Mane and Naby Keita at Liverpool, Erling Haaland at Borussia Dortmund and a number of players at RB Leipzig. The ‘sister club’ have benefitted hugely from their unofficial links with the Red Bull-owned side.

As things stand, Leipzig have Dayot Upamecano, Peter Gulacsi, Konrad Laimer, Amadou Haidara, Kevin Kampl, Marcel Sabitzer and Hee-Chan Hwang on their books, all of whom spent time with the Bulls.

Caleta-Car joined Marseille in 2018. This came after the stopper tasted defeat in the Europa League’s semi-finals, at the hands of his soon-to-be employers. Salzburg knocked out both Real Sociedad and Borussia Dortmund amid their astonishing European run.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Patson Daka are amongst the the latest batch of Salzburg talents garnering admiring glances from some of Europe’s top clubs.
