Why Atletico Madrid are ‘more upset’ with Thomas Partey than Arsenal

Atletico Madrid reportedly feel that Thomas Partey’s actions in carving out a transfer deadline day move for himself to Arsenal were completely ‘unacceptable’.

Madrid to London

The news that Gunners fans around the globe were waiting for was finally forthcoming on Monday night.

This of course came in the form of Thomas Partey’s arrival at the club.

Following a lengthy saga, spanning the majority of the summer, Mikel Arteta secured long overdue reinforcements to his side’s midfield in the final hours of the transfer window.

After Atletico first confirmed the deal, Arsenal’s announcement followed a short time later, with Partey set to ply his trade at the Emirates over the course of the season ahead:

Atleti ‘upset’

As has since been widely documented, to clinch their latest midfield addition, Arsenal actually did not need to negotiate a fee with Atletico Madrid.

This came with the capital giants having simply activated Partey’s £45 million release clause, leaving the board at the Wanda Metropolitano helpless in their efforts to keep hold of a key member of Diego Simeone’s squad.

Atleti, for their part, were understandably said to have been left fuming with the last-minute nature of Arsenal’s swoop, with the Rojiblancos having been afforded next to no time to secure a replacement (though they did manage to bring Lucas Torreira in on loan).

As outlined above, however, whilst Simeone and co. were unhappy with the Gunners, they are said to have been left even more incensed by the actions of Partey himself.

As per a report from Spanish journalist Guillem Balague:

‘Atletico are, in reality, more upset with him than they are with Arsenal.’

It is claimed that the La Liga giants feel their former midfielder’s decision to organise a medical in Madrid without informing the club was ‘unacceptable’.

The lack of a proper send-off for Partey, on the back of 9 years in the Spanish capital, is also said to have irked Atleti.
