Rivers United coach, Stanley Eguma has described his team playing their CAF Confederation Cup group B home matches at Godswill Akpabio Stadium as unfortunate.

Eguma in an exclusive interview with BSN Sports added that adoption of Nest of Champions stadium is a big minus to Rivers United.

“It’s a big minus to us (Rivers United) but we will not allow that to demoralise the team. As long as we are playing on the Nigeria soil, we see it as our home. Whether in Uyo, or Lagos or even Abuja, they’re all Nigeria soils. So, it’s our home and we have to take it like that.

“But it is unfortunate that we will not be playing in our traditional home in Port Harcourt which would have given us lot of advantages and confidence because that’s our fortress.” He concluded.

The 2021/22 NPFL champions were denied the opportunity of using the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt as their home ground in the CAF Club competition because it failed to meet up with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) requirements for hosting football matches.

Stanley Eguma’s side have been drawn in Group B of the competition along with ASEC Mimosa of Cote d’Ivoire, Congo’s Dable Noirs and DC Motema Pembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Port Harcourt club will start their group stage campaign with a trip to Dable Noirs on February 12.

They will host ASEC Mimosa in their first home match seven days later.
