The NFF had concluded arrangements and contractual terms with Mr Peseiro with his monthly salary agreed and his announcement due to be made but sports Minister’s intervention stalled the plan as the ministry queried the procedures used by the NFF in selecting the coach from among four contenders.
The NFF are running out of time to appoint a new foreign coach for the Super Eagles with 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON qualifiers due in early June.
However, it’s been gathered that the nation’s football umpire have settled for Portuguese José Peseiro, but the Sports Ministry are not happy with the choice.
The 62-year-old was previously designated as the new coach of the Super Eagles before contract negotiations broke down after the Super Eagles exited the Cameroon 2021 AFCON ingloriously.
Apart from Mr Peseiro, three other coaches who have been gunning for the top job include Phillip Cocu, Laurent Blanc and Ernesto Valverde who were also shortlisted for the post.
Complete Sports reports that the Sports ministry want a level playing field for all the shortlisted coaches and has directed the NFF to invite them to Nigeria for interview.
The NFF are however not willing to back down on their decision and ready to stick with Mr Peseiro.
It remains to be seeing how the situation would unfold but sources say that the ministry is not comfortable with the choice of Mr Peseiro for the job.
