The Mauritanian authorities have announced a heartbreaking discovery of 16 deceased individuals believed to be migrants on the northern coast of the country.

This somber finding follows closely on the heels of the grim sighting of 13 bodies in boats in the same vicinity, near the city of Nouadhibou.

It is suspected that this recent tragedy unfolded when their vessel tragically collided with rocks, leading to this devastating loss of life.

Recently there has been a sharp increase in the number of people setting off from neighbouring Senegal in a bid to reach Spain’s Canary Islands.

Since January more than 23,000 people have arrived there by boat.
