Two motorists were arrested on Monday for excessive speed in the Alberton area, east of Johannesburg, Gauteng.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department(EMPD) High-Speed Unit Officers, monitoring the stipulated 80km/h speed limit, arrested the two (2) law breakers for not adhering to what is required by the law.

It is reported that EMPD Officers deployed at the corner of Kliprivier and Vaal road, stopped a white VW Golf hatchback driven by a 34-year-old man, for clocking 146km/h, instead of 80km/h. Not long, a 57-year-old woman in a brown Audi sedan was stopped and attended to, for driving at 129km/h, on that zone.

Both motorists, facing charges of reckless and negligent driving, were handcuffed and taken to the Brackendowns Police Station.

“The EMPD wishes to emphasise to the public and motorists that, SPEED KILLS!”

Meanwhile, on Tuesday 01 August 2023 at 17:15, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Edleen Precinct Officers, responded to a reported crash at the corner of Zuurfontein and Andale Roads in the Chloorkop area, where a cyclist was involved.

On arrival, Officers found a white Toyota Quantum minibus taxi, a brown Volvo XC90 sport utility vehicle (SUV), and a black bicycle collided at the intersection, and nearby was a covered motionless body, believed to be of the 37-year-old male bicycle rider.

In addition to eight passengers from the minibus sustaining serious and slight injuries, a male pedestrian between the ages of 30 and 35, was involved in the collision and sustained serious injuries.

The injured were transported to different hospitals around the Kempton Park and Thembisa areas.

The 40-year-old male driver of the Volvo SUV was arrested and detained at Norkem Park police station, facing charges of culpable homicide and will appear at Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court soon. The Volvo SUV was taken to Naturena for safekeeping.
