According to the latest World Happiness Report, Zimbabwe has been ranked as the fourth unhappiest country in the world.
The report, which ranks 137 nations based on factors such as gross domestic product per capita, social support, life expectancy, freedom to make one’s own life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption, revealed that Zimbabwe had been ranked 134th.
This puts the country near the bottom of the list, just ahead of Afghanistan, Lebanon, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The top twenty positions on the list were dominated by European countries, with Finland taking the top spot for the sixth consecutive year. Denmark, Iceland, Israel, and the Netherlands rounded out the top five. New Zealand and Australia also performed well, ranking 10th and 12th respectively. Non-European countries in the top twenty included Israel, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the United States.
The World Happiness Report has been published annually for over ten years, with the United Nations General Assembly adopting Resolution 66/281 ten years ago to officially recognize March 20 as the International Day of Happiness.
