Edo 2020: Athletes, Official Boycott Easter Sunday Celebrations For Sporting Actions

As Christians celebrate the Easter Sunday in various churches globally, Nigerian athletes and officials are expected to hold their celebration services at various sports centers.

This is as a result of the long awaited sporting actions at the 20th National Sports Festival which commenced today across different sports venues today.

The festival having suffered series of postponements due to the outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic finally started on Friday, April 2nd with the opening of the Games village at the University of Benin hostels, Ugbowo and other venues.

However, today’s events being the day one of the sports actions, will feature 15 different sporting events just as the Easter celebration will be going on as well.

Some of the day events are judo, karate, taekwondo, kickboxing and boxing having had their weigh-in on yesterday ahead of their event today.

Abula, a traditional sport and handball will take center stage at the sports complex, University of Benin while badminton holds at the sports hall, Etete, GRA.

Boxing ring will be set at Oba Akenzua Cultural Center, Airport road, same venue for Kokowa while cricket is slates to at Adolor College, Ugbowo, Benin City.

Cycling event will commence at Airport road; Aruogba, GRA; and Benin/Ifon road. Hockey players hold their fate at St. Maria Gorretti College, Dumez Road, while judo mats will be spread at indoor sports hall, University of Benin.

Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium will host karate, kick-boxing, squash, swimming, kung-fu and tennis.

It could be recalled that all the
36 states including the FCT have registered for the biennial estival with 9,221 athletes, comprising of 5,771 males and 3,450 females.
