Borussia Dortmund lost their contention for the 2022-23 German Bundesliga title on the final day of the league, thanks to a defining goal by Nigeria-born Austrian and Mainz forward – Karim Onisiowo.
The 31-year-old Austrian international struck the deadly blow in the 24th minute of the first half, to give FSV Mainz 05 a two-goal lead shortly after Sebastian Haller missed a spot-kick for the home side.
That was Karim’s 10th goal in the Bundesliga this season in 31 appearances, having created 3 others for his teammates alongside. But Dortmund will go on to restore parity in the 90+6th minute, albeit not enough for the title.
Bayern Munich did their job at the RheinEnergie Stadion in Cologne, by scraping all maximum points against Fußball-Club Köln, who gave a late scare when they drew level in the 81st minute before Jamal Musiala had the final say nine minutes later.
Karim Onisiwo who scored the away side’s second goal, was born in Austria in 1992 to a Nigerian father and an Austrian mother, which made him eligible for both nationals.
However, a debut for the Burschen of Austria in a friendly game back in 2015 further stamped where his loyalties would lie internationally.
He has since bagged 21 caps for his country scoring once, and would end the 2022-23 Bundesliga season with his club side – FSV Mainz 05 in 9th position, accruing 46 points from 34 MatchDays.
