Former NFF 1st Vice President, Seyi Akinwunmi has disclosed the reason the leadership of football administration in the country appointed Finidi George as Super Eagles Head Coach.
Speaking as a guest on Super Eagles Watch Podcasts hosted by HotSports, the former Lagos FA Chairman said the foreign exchange and the economy necessitated the appointment of the former Nigeria international.
According to him, the choice of an indigenous coach will balance football and the economy while calling on the players to reciprocate the clamour for the appointment of a local coach.
“It’s a good move. The real issue is what is the job of the Super Eagles Coach. It is really to manage the players and ensure they play to his plans, system and help them to win matches.
“He has to be an international coach and I think Finidi George has all of these. He has to be respected by the players for his achievements.
“From what I see, if we are to go for a foreign coach, we have to go for a high level coach and maybe we cannot afford it. The foreign exchange market is crazy. We needed to balance football and the economy. I think that’s what they have done. I don’t have an issue with the appointment.
“I just hope the players will reciprocate his clamour that people have for an indigenous coach by playing well and doing well so that more Nigerian coaches will have a chance.”
